Trinity Emmanuel Lutheran Church  in Rochester, N.Y. is seeking a qualified, energetic, self-motivated Christian with college experience to fill the position of youth director.  This is a part time paid position requiring approximately 40 hours a month working with grades 6 - 12 (about 25 youth) on a regular basis. 

We feel that the most important role of the youth director is to be a caring adult friend to the youth: someone who is willing to take the time to hear their concerns, joys, frustrations and problems, and someone they can trust.  This person needs to be comfortable speaking to young people about spiritual, personal, social and topical issues.

The youth director is responsible for all programming and implementing of youth activities and special events.  This involves organizing, delegating, and coordinating such things as retreats, service projects and fund-raisers, as well as responsibility for recruiting and coordinating volunteers to assist in implementing the youth program.  The youth director will remain professionally current in the areas of leadership and ministry.  He/she will maintain accurate up to date records of youth group members, youth group finances, volunteers, and programs, as well as maintain regular communication with the Christian Education Committee for goal setting.

A. To cooperate with the Pastor, and others invited into the Music selection process,  at NLPC in the area of general planning, leadership, and implementation of weekly  music program of the congregation, on  part time, exempt employee basis and to  provide appropriate diversity of music for services of worship (including weddings  and other occasions) in the position of Music Director, the duties and  responsibilities of which are more fully set forth below and in the attached Exhibit  B - Personnel Manual, Section 3.13.

B.  To assist the Pastor in implementing the Session's policies relating to the position  of Music Director, i.e., the Session approved report from the Music Diversity Task  Force, which recommended using traditional, contemporary, praise, gospel, and  other styles of music to meet a wide range of needs.

C. To work with the church staff collegially and to maintain a professional relationship  with church committees as a member of the church's staff, being directly  responsible to the Pastor as Head of Staff.

The MUSIC DIRECTOR shall:

1.  Provide piano and organ music and direct the Adult Choir at the regular Sunday  weekly service and shall support and assist Pastor in selecting appropriate music for  each service.  Also, the Music Director shall assist the Pastor in the resourcing of  music/musicians for the monthly W O W service.

2.  Provide piano, organ and choral music for the following additional services during the  year:  Up to five (5) Holy day (holiday) services not occurring on a Sunday morning.

3.  Subject to employee's availability, provide piano and organ and choral music for  additional services not included above.  The employee shall be reimbursed for such  services at an agreed upon rate.  Assist in the hiring of substitute musicians when  employee is not available for Sunday services, holy days or evening services,  weddings and funerals or other services noted herein.      

4.  Be responsible for the purchase of all music and music supplies and the hiring of  instrumental and vocal soloists, with the approval of the Pastor.  Expenditures on this  area shall not exceed the yearly budget.    

5.  Rehearse no less than once weekly with the Adult Choir, and briefly before each  service.  During the months of July and August the Choir shall not perform, however  musical accompaniment is to be provided by the Music Director unless otherwise  directed by the Pastor.         

6.  Cooperate with the Pastor and the entire NLPC community in the area of general  planning and leadership of the music program.  This will include choosing and  performing music which meets the diverse musical needs of the entire NLPC  congregation, with the pastor's approval.  This may include working with a youth  choir or other congregational groups gathered for a musical offering. 

7.  Maintain the Music Library in an orderly fashion and provide, at NLPC's expense, a  suitable number of copies of musical pieces to enable performance of those pieces by  the Choir.  No employee shall engage in the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted  materials by photocopying or any other means that would expose NLPC to liability for  penalties under existing copyright laws.  In the event that photocopying of music  becomes necessary for appropriate purposes, the Music Director shall first obtain all  necessary permissions and authorizations prior to any such reproduction of  copyrighted materials.  

8.  Provide music at all weddings requiring piano and organ music held within NLPC's  premises.  The services of other pianists/organists may be used only with the  permission of the Music Director.  For providing a short program of music preceding  the wedding ceremony and performing at the wedding ceremony, the employee shall be reimbursed at an agreed upon rate. 

9.  Provide music for funeral services held at NLPC, if available at the time of the funeral.   The employee shall be reimbursed for such services at an agreed upon rate.  The fee  for attendance at rehearsals shall be as set forth above for weddings.

10. Attend regularly scheduled staff and Worship Committee meetings, and upon  sufficient and reasonable notice, attend other committee meetings as necessary.  

11. Report to the appropriate committee(s) the condition and needs of maintenance of  the NLPC musical instruments.  The Employer shall allocate funds and provide for  the proper care of these instruments. 

12. Be present in the buildings and facilities of NLPC a minimum of two (2) hours   weekly, and other times as requested, if available, in order to facilitate  communication with the staff and to achieve integration and collegiality with all  programs of the Employer.                

13. The Music Director shall own the copyright to any work composed, created,  arranged, or otherwise modified, regardless of whether the composition, creation,  arrangement or modification was done during the term of the Music Director's NLPC  employment.

Mission:  The Director of Christian Education Ministry is called to demonstrate a desire for children to know God’s love, assist parents and congregation in keeping promises spoken in the baptismal covenant, nurture teaching staff in a way that enables teachers to grow spiritually while they are teaching, welcome children in Sunday School, both children of the church and visitors, by developing a relationship with Sunday School children and their parents, and welcome children in worship.

 Position:  A part-time, salaried position averaging 8-10 hours per week across 11 months, with the remainder of the year as unpaid leave to be scheduled on a flexible basis.  The weekly commitment includes an average of three Sunday mornings per month.  Salary is approved by the Session.  Responsibilities are carried out on behalf of children and youth, nursery through high school, in coordination with the Christian Education Committee of New Life Presbyterian Church in accordance with the policies and directions of the Session and Christian Education Committee.

 

Accountability:  Accountable to the pastor as head of staff and indirectly to the Session and Christian Education Committee.  Annual evaluation will be conducted by the pastor, Session Personnel Committee and a member of the Christian Education Committee.

 

Responsibilities: 

 

Be present and engaged with children, families and Sunday School teachers an average of three Sundays per month (9:30 a.m.12 noon) over the course of the year (including Summer Sundays “one-room schoolhouse”).  Provide direct support to Sunday School teachers and children including getting to know teachers and children, acknowledging teachers’ and children’s participation and gifts, and providing safety/behavioral support to children.  Introduce visiting families to nursery and staff, Sunday School teachers and classrooms.  Assist in last-minute staffing needs as the need arises.  Be present in worship through Children’s Message.  Participate in church family fellowship during Coffee Hour.

 

Plan, present and pray with children gathered for Children’s Message during worship one Sunday per month.

 

Plan and prepare Bible-based children’s resources (clipboard activities) for children to use during worship on monthly Family Worship Sundays.  Assist in identifying children to share their gifts during worship.

 

Together with Christian Education Committee, review and select curriculum to be implemented in Sunday School.  Develop supplemental curriculum resources as needed (i.e. Summer Sunday School “one-room schoolhouse curriculum).

 

Assist with the Christian Education Committee in recruiting, training, providing curriculum overview and on-going resources and supplies (resource room inventory and maintenance) to Sunday School teaching staff.  Participate in yearly teacher orientation and follow-up transition meetings.

 

Act as link to Presbytery by sharing resources and continuing education information with Sunday School teachers, youth leaders, families and Christian Education Committee.  Participate in Presbytery’s “brown bag lunches” for Christian Educators.

 

Inform congregation of children’s ministry activities and resources through the annual Sunday School brochure, monthly Herald article, weekly bulletin insert, bulletin board postings and displays (including children’s Sunday School projects).

 

Maintain up-to-date Christian Education calendar, budget expenditures record, forms required by New Life Presbyterian Safe Spaces Policy (staff volunteer forms, children’s Sunday School registration forms), class registers, attendance statistics, and visitor follow-up mailings.  

 

Participate in the planning of and on-site support of related children’s ministries including Vacation Bible School, youth group activities, neighborhood outreach (e.g. Soul Singers) and special event family programs within New Life and with linkage churches.

 

Celebrate Christian Education Ministries by, together with the Christian Education Committee, planning and participating in Sunday School Teacher Orientation, “Rally Day”/”Jubilee Sunday” (beginning of Sunday School year), Christmas Pagaent, Teacher Recognition, and Children’s Sunday.

 

Communicate on a regular basis with the pastor and the Christian Education Committee by participating in monthly Committee meetings.
